Plan a simple fabric bookmark

Use an offcut and a small sketch to design a personal keepsake.

Choose the shape

Decide on a finished length and width that fit the book. Draw that rectangle on paper, then decide how your chosen sewing method will finish its edges. Record any allowances for that method before cutting fabric.

Use a test piece

Try your intended edge finish on a scrap. A sample will show whether the thickness feels comfortable between pages and whether your thread suits the fabric. Keep the bookmark flat; bulky decoration may make it awkward to use.

Add a personal detail

An initial, small outline or contrasting fabric patch can be enough. Work your decoration before the final assembly if that suits the method. Avoid presenting a decorative bookmark as suitable for every valuable or fragile book.

Keep the successful notes

Record your finished dimensions, material and edge method. Put a labelled offcut with the plan if you may make another. Our project planner provides a place for the sketch and the making sequence.
