Begin with the task
Clover distinguishes hand-sewing needle types by their intended work. Sharps are a general hand-sewing option; tapestry needles are associated with counted work, while chenille needles serve tasks such as crewel and ribbon embroidery. Read the manufacturer’s guidance for the type you are buying.
Numbers need context
Within a needle type, higher size numbers generally indicate a finer needle. Identical numbers across different types are not a reliable comparison. Start with the fabric and thread, then choose a compatible needle eye and point.
Make a material note
Keep the needle packet, thread code and fabric label near a successful scrap test. If the thread will not pass comfortably through the eye or the fabric behaves poorly, reassess the combination rather than forcing the needle.
Store it between steps
Give loose needles one controlled home and put them away when you stop. Good lighting and a clear work surface help you see what you are doing. Replace damaged tools and follow their handling instructions.
