A scrap-fabric hoop study

A small composition for exploring texture, colour and an outline.

Make a layout off the hoop

Place a background scrap on the table, then arrange smaller offcuts over it. Try a large area, a medium one and a small accent. Keep edges clear enough to place the work in the intended hoop.

Test your materials

Choose a support and attachment method appropriate to the fabric. Test it on a scrap and follow the material instructions. If you add embroidery, prepare the fabric and leave enough margin for your frame or hoop.

Explore a few marks

Add a line, a cluster of stitches or an original traced motif rather than trying to fill the whole surface. Keep a record of what you used and where it worked. A small abstract study does not need a detailed picture to feel complete.

Review it before display

Check the back and how the layers are attached. Choose a display position and fixing appropriate to the item. Keep decorative work and loose craft supplies separate from children’s play materials.
