Start with broad groups
Empty a small amount onto a tray you can control. Separate likely garment replacements from decorative craft pieces. Put broken or questionable buttons aside. Keep loose small parts away from children and pets, and gather everything before leaving the workspace.
Choose one useful system
For repairs, diameter and attachment style may be more useful than colour. For decorative layouts, colour families may be your first choice. You can combine two systems with simple labelled compartments, but avoid creating categories too detailed to maintain.
Keep sets together
Count matching buttons and label the set. An envelope or compartment with a note can preserve a shirt’s spares better than a mixed jar. Keep known garment and care information with a replacement set.
Leave room for odd ones
One compartment for unidentified or unusual buttons stops the whole system becoming a research project. Pull from that section for decorative experiments where the exact material is not critical.
