Buttons

Two holes, four holes or a shank?

Start with how a button attaches, then think about size and style.

Look underneath

Flat sew-through buttons show holes in their face. A shank button has a loop below it. Record that attachment style alongside diameter, colour and thickness when matching a replacement. A similar-looking face is not enough if the underside will not work with the garment.

Match the closure

Compare a remaining button with the buttonhole and the fabric around it. A replacement needs to pass through the opening and sit sensibly when fastened. Try the loose button in the existing opening before sewing. If the hole is damaged or the fabric is fragile, the job may need more than a new button.

Use a reference card

Sketch the attachment style and keep measurements in millimetres. Add a photo for your own reference if useful. Take the actual garment or an existing spare into account rather than choosing solely by the retailer’s colour name.

Decorative work is different

For paper art you can choose buttons by layout and appearance. For a functional garment closure, fit and clearance matter too. Keep the two piles separate so an attractive craft assortment does not become your only replacement stock.
