Mending

Sew on a flat button: a small first repair

Practise the basic movement on a spare piece before working on a garment.

Prepare the repair

Check the fabric and buttonhole, compare the replacement with the remaining buttons and mark the original position. Choose compatible hand-sewing thread and needle. Support the fabric so it does not bunch under the button.

Attach and secure

For a flat button, thread and knot the needle, then work through a pair of holes and the fabric several times. On a four-hole button, attach both pairs. Finish by securing the thread at the back and trimming it, then check the button gently. Hobbycraft’s illustrated tutorial is linked below for the complete visual demonstration.

Leave room where needed

A flat button on thicker fabric may need clearance below it. Do not pull the face hard against the fabric if that prevents fastening. See the thread-shank guide for the role of a spacer, and follow your chosen tool’s instructions.

Review the result

Try the closure without forcing it and look for puckering or a loose position. Keep a record of the replacement size and thread colour. If the surrounding fabric is damaged, treat that as a separate repair rather than hiding it beneath the new button.
